Gothic vs. Old English
Both names describe blackletter, the angular script used in medieval Europe. "Old English" is the name people use for jerseys, mastheads and tattoos. "Gothic" is used for the dark aesthetic: metal bands, goth and emo profiles, horror and fantasy games. The letters are the same, the framing changes. For classic lettering, see Old English fonts.
Symbols that suit gothic text
| Symbol | Name | Use |
| ✝ ✟ † | Crosses and dagger | Framing a name |
| 🥀 | Wilted rose | Moody bios and captions |
| ☾ ☽ | Crescent moons | Night and witchy themes |
| ⛧ | Inverted pentagram | Metal and occult themes; may show as a box on older phones |
| ♱ | East Syriac cross | Ornate alternative to ✝ |
Tips
- Write in normal case. Blackletter capitals are ornate and hard to read in a row.
- Use bold for small spaces. Heavy blackletter holds up better in profile names and on small screens.
- Keep it short. One to three words reads best.
Questions
What is the gothic font called?
Typographers call it blackletter, and the style this generator uses is Fraktur. Gothic, Old English and blackletter all refer to the same family.
Can I use gothic fonts on Instagram and Discord?
Yes. Paste them into bios, display names, captions and messages. Usernames only accept plain letters.
Why don't gothic numbers work?
Unicode only has blackletter letters, not digits. Numbers stay plain in the light style and become bold in the heavy style.
