How copy-and-paste fonts work

Why styled letters survive a paste, and where they come from.

When you change the font in a word processor, the letters stay the same and only their appearance changes. That information about the font lives in the document, so when you copy the text into Instagram or a chat app, the formatting is lost and you get plain letters again.

Copy-and-paste fonts work differently. They don't change the appearance of normal letters. They swap each letter for a different character that already looks styled.

Every character has a number

Unicode is the international standard that gives every character in every writing system its own code number. The letter A is U+0041. The Arabic letter alif, the Chinese character for "person" and every emoji each have their own number too. Because phones and computers all follow Unicode, text looks the same everywhere you send it.

Among its more than 150,000 characters, Unicode includes several sets of letters that look styled. The biggest is the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, added in Unicode 3.1 in 2001. Mathematicians use different letter styles to mean different things, so the standard includes full alphabets in bold, italic, script, Fraktur (Old English), double-struck and more.

What a font generator does

A generator like Letterpop holds a map from each normal letter to its look-alike character. When you type, it swaps every letter through the map and shows you the result. Letterpop does this inside your browser, so the text never leaves your device.

Some effects work a little differently. Strikethrough and underline styles add an invisible "combining" mark after each letter, which the device draws on top of it. Upside-down text uses letters from other alphabets that happen to look like flipped Latin letters.

What these fonts can't do

  • Not every character exists. Most styles cover A to Z, and many cover numbers, but there are no styled versions of most punctuation or accented letters like รฉ or รฑ. Those stay plain.
  • Search can't read them as words. A styled word is made of different characters, so searching for the plain word usually won't find it.
  • Screen readers struggle. See are fancy fonts accessible?
  • Some devices can't show them. See why fonts show as boxes.

Questions

Are copy-and-paste fonts real fonts?

No. They're Unicode characters that look like styled letters. A real font changes how normal letters are drawn; these are different characters, which is why they keep their look when pasted.

Why don't accented letters get styled?

Unicode only includes styled versions of the basic letters A to Z (and, for some styles, digits). Letters like รฉ, รผ or รฑ have no styled versions, so they stay plain.

Is it legal to use these fonts?

Yes. They're standard characters that anyone can type. There's no font file or license involved.
