How to change your font on Instagram

Add bold, cursive and other styles to your bio, name and captions in under a minute.

Instagram has no font menu for your profile or posts. Everything you type appears in the app's standard typeface. The way around this is Unicode text: letters that look bold, cursive or decorative but are really different characters, so they keep their style when you paste them. Here's how to use them in each part of Instagram.

Step by step: change the font in your bio

  1. Open the Instagram font generator and type your bio text.
  2. Tap Copy next to the style you like.
  3. In Instagram, go to your profile and tap Edit profile, then Bio.
  4. Paste the text, then tap Done or the check mark to save.

The same steps work for your Name field, the bold name shown above your bio. Instagram may limit how often you can change your name, so pick a style you're happy with before saving.

Which styles look best

StyleExample
Bold sans
Bold cursive
Small caps
Old English

Bold and italic sans styles are the safest. They display on nearly every phone and stay easy to read. Cursive and Old English look striking but are harder to read in long sentences, so use them for one short line.

Tips for a bio that still works

  • Keep keywords plain. Instagram search reads your name and bio as text. A styled word like ๐—ฃ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ is a different set of characters to a search engine, so people searching "photographer" may not match it.
  • Mix styles sparingly. One styled line plus plain text looks deliberate. Five different fonts look messy.
  • Check on another phone. Some decorative styles show as empty boxes on older Android phones. See why fonts show as boxes.
  • Think about screen readers. People using screen readers may hear styled letters read out one by one. Our guide to fancy fonts and accessibility explains how to use them kindly.

Questions

Can I change the font of my Instagram username?

No. Usernames only accept plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores. You can style your display name and bio instead.

Why does my Instagram bio font look different on my friend's phone?

The styled letters are Unicode characters, and each phone draws them with its own built-in fonts. They look slightly different from device to device, and very old phones may show boxes for rare characters.

Is it safe to use font generator text on Instagram?

Yes. It's ordinary text made of standard Unicode characters. Nothing is installed and no account is connected.
