Discord gives you two ways to style text. In messages, it supports markdown: simple symbols that turn into bold, italic, headers and more. For places markdown doesn't reach, like your nickname or profile, you can paste Unicode fonts from a generator.
Markdown cheat sheet
| Type this | To get |
**bold** | bold |
*italic* or _italic_ | italic |
***bold italic*** | bold italic |
__underline__ | underline |
~~strikethrough~~ | strikethrough |
`inline code` | inline code |
``` on its own line before and after | A code block |
||spoiler|| | Hidden text people tap to reveal |
> quote | A quoted line |
# Heading at the start of a line | A large heading (## and ### for smaller ones) |
You can combine them. __**text**__ gives underlined bold text. To show the symbols themselves instead of formatting, put a backslash in front, like \*not italic\*.
Custom fonts for your nickname and profile
Markdown only works in messages. To style your server nickname, display name, About Me or custom status, use Unicode fonts:
- Type your name in the font generator and copy a style.
- In Discord, open the server, tap your name and choose Edit Server Profile (for a nickname) or open Profiles in your user settings (for your display name and About Me).
- Paste and save.
| Style | Example nickname |
| Bold sans | ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ผ๐๐๐ผ๐
|
| Bold cursive | ๐ข๐ฑ๐ช๐ญ๐ธ๐๐๐ธ๐ |
| Old English | ๐๐ฅ๐๐ก๐ฌ๐ด๐๐ฌ๐ต |
| Bubble | โโโโโโฆโปโโง |
| Small caps | ๊ฑสแดแด
แดแดก๊ฐแดx |
Usernames are plain text onlyYour unique Discord username only accepts lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Styled fonts work in your display name and nicknames, not in the username itself.
Be kind to your server
Some servers have rules about nicknames that are hard to read or mention. A styled name can't be typed with a normal keyboard, so people may struggle to @mention you. Bold and italic styles are the easiest compromise. Screen reader users may also hear styled names spelled out, which our accessibility guide covers.
Questions
How do you make text bold on Discord?
Put two asterisks on each side of the text, like **this**. Discord turns it bold when you send the message.
Why doesn't my Discord formatting work?
Check that there are no spaces between the symbols and the text, and that you used the right number of symbols. Markdown also doesn't apply inside code blocks.
Can I change the font Discord uses?
Not the app's font itself, though you can adjust text size and other options in Appearance and Accessibility settings. Unicode fonts change how specific letters look wherever you paste them.
